country dresses: a photographic memory

The concept behind this series of photographs came about as I was thinking of the idea of eco-fashion.  As I was talking with a client one day, we started talking about bridesmaids and prom dresses.  I started thinking about all the bridesmaids and prom dresses that are currently sitting in peoples closets never to be worn again, and it made me feel sad.  Like the feeling I get when I feel stuck or in a rut.  Or maybe when I feel like someone doesn’t get me and see how fabulous and complicated and beautiful I am.  So,  when we, bluebirds and tarantulas, decided to put on a fashion show and come up with our collection, we thought it was the perfect time to give them a new life, a fresh start.  Let people see them through fresh eyes.  See their potential, and maybe be inspired to see potential in other things that seem useless.

From my experience, I can say the same for people.  How many people do you know that have moved away from their home town, or even just their current surroundings to get a fresh start., to fulfill dreams or meet goals, or even just because they were drawn to a place.  On the flip side, leaving because you have to get away to break a mold or get a new perspective.  Or because these people, whom you know and love, see you through the same eyes that can’t let you grow and change and come into your own the way you need to.  Either way the idea of leaving home, or changing, was intriguing to me because not only had I done it and seen the value of it, but I have also seen those who haven’t or can’t and how that also effects them.

Can you imagine who these dresses were, what kind of music they listened to, or who was their first crush?   These dresses were from a small town and, just like so many of us, needed a fresh start.  In the series I chose to use double exposures because of the space it gives them and at the same time movement.   The ghosts of who you were and who you may become, caught in a single moment.   Anything is possible.  Make your dreams come true.     Much love and peace,
